Joplin, MO – The Communications Department at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) has appointed Brian Mehrens, a longtime communications professor and lead advisor for the university’s radio station KXMS, as its new department chair this semester. Mehrens steps into the role following the retirement of Ward Bryant, who concluded a 34-year career at MSSU. His appointment positions him to serve as a bridge between the faculty and administrative functions within the department.

Mehrens outlined his priorities for the department, indicating a focus on continuity with recent initiatives while also emphasizing student experiences. He plans to build upon the work of his predecessor, noting that "Mr. Bryant put in place some new courses and certificates" designed to align with evolving student needs and interests. Mehrens stated his intention of "continuing that momentum as we put those curriculum changes into action."

A central aim for Mehrens is to enhance student retention, a recognized goal across the university and within the department itself. He seeks to connect students with the many opportunities available on campus, guiding them to recognize the benefits of participating in immersive learning experiences. This includes engagements within the Communications Department, as well as broader opportunities across campus such as those offered by Global Education and Health and Life Sciences programs. Mehrens values hands-on experience and collaborative efforts, intending to see these practices reflected in his leadership.

The department's approach to student preparation relies on external input to ensure students are ready for their careers. An advisory board composed of professionals provides insights into how effectively students are being prepared for their futures in a competitive job market. Mehrens intends to follow a similar strategy, focusing on ongoing evaluations to make necessary adjustments. He emphasized the importance of preparing students for future employment demands, stating the need for "teaching the skills and concepts that employers will be looking for."

Mehrens also expressed a desire to foster a more integrated and dynamic learning environment by encouraging faculty to pursue their individual areas of interest. This initiative is designed to create more opportunities for students to collaborate directly with their instructors on projects. He believes that "students get excited when they see their instructors passionate about a topic," and that such engagement can lead to a deeper, long-term investment by students in the department.

As the Fall 2026 semester progresses, the Communications Department anticipates an increase in collaborative activities and a strengthened overall connection between its students and Missouri Southern faculty members, in line with Mehrens' vision for the department.
