The Communications Department at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) has appointed Brian Mehrens as its newest department chair this semester. Mr. Mehrens, a familiar figure on campus, assumes the leadership role following the retirement of Ward Bryant, who concluded a 34-year career at MSSU. Mr. Mehrens previously served as a long-time communications professor and was the lead advisor for MSSU's radio station, KXMS.

Stepping into the position, Mr. Mehrens aims to build upon the department’s recent advancements. He noted that his predecessor, Mr. Bryant, had implemented new courses and certificates designed to align with evolving student needs and interests. Mr. Mehrens looks forward to "continuing that momentum" as the department enacts these curriculum changes. His initial focus prioritizes student experiences, bridging the gap between faculty work and administrative oversight.

Valuing practical skills, Mr. Mehrens seeks to incorporate hands-on experience and collaborative efforts into the department’s framework. A primary objective for both the university and the Communications Department, as stated by Mr. Mehrens, is to increase student retention. He expressed a desire to guide students towards the "benefits that come from participating in the immersive learning" both within the department and in other areas. This includes opportunities through Global Education and Health and Life Sciences initiatives available across the MSSU campus.

To ensure students are well-prepared for their careers, the department relies on an advisory board composed of professionals. This external input helps analyze how effectively the department is preparing students for their futures. Mr. Mehrens affirmed that this external evaluation process will continue to guide departmental changes. He emphasized the importance of preparing students for the future job market, stating the department must teach "the skills and concepts that employers will be looking for" in the coming years rather than solely focusing on current demands.

Mr. Mehrens’ plans also include fostering greater collaboration between students and faculty members. He stated his desire to "encourage faculty to continue to lean into their respective areas of interest" while also inviting students to participate in more projects with their instructors. He believes that students become "excited when they see their instructors passionate about a topic" and that involvement can build a "longer-term investment" in the department as a whole.

As the Fall 2026 semester progresses, the Communications Department expects to see increased collaboration and overall connection between its students and the Missouri Southern faculty. This strategic direction under Mr. Mehrens aims to cultivate a dynamic learning environment that prepares students for evolving professional landscapes.
