The Communications Department at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) has appointed Brian Mehrens, a familiar figure on campus, as its new department chair this semester. Mehrens, a long-time communications professor and lead advisor for the university’s radio station, KXMS, steps into the role following the retirement of Ward Bryant, who concluded a 34-year career at MSSU.
Mehrens outlined his priorities for the department, emphasizing a commitment to building upon the foundations laid by his predecessor while actively prioritizing student experiences. He noted that Bryant had recently implemented new courses and certificates designed to academically support evolving student needs and interests. Mehrens expressed his intention to continue this momentum, focusing on putting those curriculum changes into action.
A central tenet of Mehrens’ approach involves valuing hands-on experience and collaborative efforts within the department. He aims to see these practices reflected in his work as chair. A key objective for the university, and specifically the Communications Department, is to increase student retention. Mehrens stated his hope is to guide students to "see the benefits that come from participating in the immersive learning" both within the Communications Department and across the wider campus, including Global Education and Health and Life Sciences programs. The goal is to ensure students connect with the many activities on campus.
The Communications Department does not operate in isolation regarding its curriculum and student preparation. It relies on an advisory board composed of professionals who provide external input. This board helps analyze how effectively the department is preparing students for their future careers. Mehrens’ plan for the department mirrors this external evaluation process, focusing on ongoing assessments and making necessary adjustments. He articulated a strategic vision for the curriculum, stating that to maintain student competitiveness in the job market, the department must teach skills and concepts employers will seek in the coming years, not solely those required today.
Mehrens also plans to foster a dynamic environment by encouraging faculty members to continue delving into their respective areas of interest. Concurrently, he seeks to increase collaboration between students and faculty on a wider range of projects. He believes that students become more engaged when they witness their instructors’ passion for a topic, and when invited to participate, their long-term investment in the department as a whole will grow.
As the Fall 2026 semester progresses, the department expects to see an increase in collaboration and overall connection between its students and the Missouri Southern faculty.
