One Joplin will present a poverty simulation event designed to offer Joplin community leaders direct insight into the daily challenges faced by low-income families. The program, titled “Rethinking Poverty,” is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Joplin Public Library, located at 1901 E. 20th St.

The simulated experience aims to spotlight the intricate difficulties and decisions that low-income households navigate regularly. By immersing participants in a scenario that mirrors these conditions, One Joplin seeks to foster a deeper understanding and empathy among the city's leadership. The four-hour session is structured to provide a comprehensive, albeit simulated, encounter with the economic realities faced by many residents, allowing leaders to move beyond theoretical discussions to a more experiential appreciation of the issues.

The initiative builds on previous efforts to engage local officials. For instance, Joplin Mayor Pro Tem Josh DeTar participated in a similar poverty simulation event in 2025. During that earlier simulation, DeTar was observed attempting to negotiate at a pawn shop, an activity representative of the financial pressures and limited options often encountered by individuals in low-income situations. His participation underscored the immersive nature of these simulations and their capacity to place leaders directly into scenarios that reflect real-world economic hardship.

“Rethinking Poverty” specifically targets Joplin community leaders, emphasizing One Joplin's goal to inform and influence decision-making processes within the city. The intention is for the insights gained from the simulation to contribute to more responsive and effective community development strategies, resource allocation, and support programs for vulnerable populations. By guiding leaders through a firsthand perspective, the event aims to bridge the gap between policy development and the lived experiences of those most impacted by economic challenges.

The Joplin Public Library, a central community resource, serves as a fitting venue for this public-oriented event. Its location at 1901 E. 20th St. ensures accessibility for participating leaders. One Joplin's sustained commitment to presenting these simulations reflects an ongoing effort to raise awareness and promote meaningful change in how poverty is addressed within Joplin and its surrounding communities. The event is an opportunity for leaders to reconsider conventional perceptions of poverty and explore new, informed approaches to support residents facing economic hardship.
