Vandals have stolen electrical wiring from a tiny home under construction in Joplin, forcing volunteers to redo work on a vital project designed to assist people experiencing homelessness. The theft occurred at a Vita Nova Village construction site situated near the intersection of 12th Street and Byers Avenue. This incident marks the second reported act of vandalism at the development within approximately three weeks.
The latest target was a home that had just reached its third week of construction. Individuals broke through plywood that covered an opening and proceeded to cut out the electrical wiring that volunteers had recently installed. This damage necessitates that all the electrical work be redone, creating an unforeseen expense for the nonprofit and potentially delaying the overall construction timeline for the housing unit. The previous incident involved a trailer that was parked closer to the road within the same development area.
Vita Nova Village is a nonprofit organization working in partnership with Sister Corps, a volunteer group, to establish transitional housing for individuals experiencing homelessness in Joplin and the surrounding communities. The project aims to develop a community of up to 20 tiny homes. These homes are specifically designed to provide comprehensive support, including transitional housing, employment assistance, and educational opportunities, all intended to help residents work towards achieving long-term housing stability.
Joshua Bloyd, a volunteer who had dedicated his time and labor to install the now-stolen wiring, conveyed his frustration in a public statement released on Saturday. Bloyd emphasized the commitment of those involved in the project, noting that he and others were not working for financial gain but because the project serves the community's needs. He described learning of the theft as particularly disappointing given the significant time and resources volunteers had already contributed. Bloyd characterized the act of intentionally tearing apart the work for "a few dollars worth of stolen wire" as "incredibly frustrating." Despite this setback, Bloyd reiterated that the volunteers remain steadfast in their commitment to the project's mission, stating that they would not allow the actions of a few individuals to undermine Vita Nova Village's goals.
Project organizers are currently appealing to the public for assistance. They urge anyone with information regarding the vandalism to contact the Joplin Police Department. Additionally, they are seeking skilled electricians who are willing to volunteer their services to help get the construction back on its original schedule and mitigate further delays. The community effort to provide stable housing for vulnerable residents now faces unexpected challenges due to these destructive acts.
