Joplin, MO — Drivers traversing Main Street in Joplin should prepare for significant traffic alterations beginning Tuesday, November 3, as construction commences on a $5.3 million streetscaping project. This substantial public works initiative aims to enhance the aesthetic and functional appeal of a key urban corridor, initiating a nine-month period of construction and road adjustments for motorists.
The initial phase of the project will concentrate on the segment of Main Street situated between 12th and 15th streets. Work is scheduled to begin on the east side of the roadway within this three-block span. During this phase, traffic flow on Main Street will be reduced to a single lane in each direction. Vehicles will be temporarily shifted to the west side of the roadway, with the new configuration guided by clearly visible signs and various traffic-control devices, as Newstalk KZRG reported.
This undertaking is part of a broader, comprehensive effort to beautify Joplin’s Midtown district. The ultimate vision for the project involves a complete transformation of Main Street across a larger expanse, specifically from Eighth Street down to 15th Street. The streetscaping improvements are designed to foster a more appealing and pedestrian-friendly environment within this central part of the city, intending to revitalize the area for residents and visitors alike.
The total cost for these improvements is established at $5.3 million. Funding for this significant investment is derived from two primary sources. Half of the project's cost will be defrayed by a federal Community Project Funding grant, which is administered through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The remaining portion of the funding will come from Joplin's established transportation sales tax, demonstrating a combination of federal support and local financial commitment to infrastructure enhancements.
While the first phase outlines immediate changes, city officials have indicated that additional traffic alterations and lane closures will be necessary as the construction progresses through its various stages. These future changes will be announced to the public as they are finalized, advising drivers of new routes or adjusted travel patterns. The entire project is anticipated to reach completion within nine months from its start date, requiring sustained attention from commuters to the evolving traffic landscape on Main Street during this period.
