A fatal single-vehicle crash occurred just before 9 p.m. Tuesday on MO-43 near Spring River, an area where bridge construction is presently underway. A 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck collided with and broke through two "road closed" signs, subsequently leaving the paved surface and overturning down an adjacent embankment. Two individuals were ejected from the vehicle during the incident.

The driver, identified as Clay Charlton, a 25-year-old male from Liberal, Missouri, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. A 36-year-old female passenger, a resident of Joplin, sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital, where she reportedly remains in critical condition. Services for Mr. Charlton are scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, at Hannon Free Will Baptist Church. A fund has also been established to provide support for his two-year-old son.

All seven inmates were subsequently transported to various area hospitals under continuous police escort. Detectives with the Joplin Police Department are actively investigating how the illicit drugs managed to enter the secure jail facility.
