The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has postponed its annual winter trout stocking program across the state, delaying the release of rainbow trout into urban lakes due to unusually warm temperatures. As Newstalk KZRG reported, stocking efforts, which typically commence the first week of November, have been pushed back to the second week of the month.
Clint Hale, MDC Hatchery Systems Manager, explained the necessity of the delay, noting that trout are a cold-water species that thrive in temperatures around 55 to 60 degrees. Entering warmer waters “can be a shock to their system, ultimately resulting in their death,” Hale told Newstalk KZRG, emphasizing the department’s commitment to the health and survival of the fish.
Each fall, the MDC stocks more than 70,000 rainbow trout into over 30 urban lakes across Missouri. These trout are raised at four of the MDC's state trout hatcheries. The program aims to provide readily accessible trout fishing opportunities for residents close to home throughout the winter season. The primary goal of the MDC is to ensure the stocked trout are healthy and capable of thriving, maximizing the fishing opportunities for anglers.
Fortunately, cooler conditions are anticipated in the coming week. These lower temperatures are expected to bring water levels down sufficiently, allowing for the safe and successful stocking of the fish. Anglers can anticipate the commencement of stocking during the second week of November.
Trout fishing regulations vary significantly depending on the specific location and the time of year. Some areas permit anglers to harvest trout immediately upon stocking, while others operate under a catch-and-release policy until February 1. Anglers are strongly encouraged to consult local regulations before engaging in fishing activities to ensure compliance.
All Missouri residents between the ages of 16 and 64 must possess a valid fishing permit. Additionally, to keep any harvested trout, anglers of all ages are required to have a Missouri trout permit. These permits are available for purchase from numerous vendors statewide, online through the mdc.mo.gov/buypermits portal, or via the MDC’s free MO Fishing mobile application. Further information regarding winter trout stocking locations and specific regulations can be found on the Missouri Department of Conservation website.
