The Salvation Army officially opened its Opportunity Center in Joplin on Tuesday, September 22, establishing a crucial new hub for community support. Located at the existing Salvation Army facility at 320 East 8th Street, the center is designed to provide a centralized point of access for individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, and other difficult circumstances to receive multiple vital community resources. This initiative emerged from a 2023 community plan, which highlighted the significant need for a “one-stop shop” where residents could conveniently access diverse services from a single location.

Layne Bourgeous, the Director of Homelessness Response, underscored the collaborative effort behind the center's creation, noting that more than 21 organizations are actively working together through the community’s System of Care. Bourgeous explained that while many entities were already engaged in this critical work, they often operated “siloed or independent of each other.” The Opportunity Center aims to bridge these gaps, fostering a more coordinated and effective approach to assistance.

The range of services now available at the Opportunity Center is extensive, covering many facets of support for vulnerable populations. These include direct housing assistance, which can be a primary challenge for many residents. Mental health screenings are offered, providing an entry point to essential care. Individuals can also receive help with enrollment in crucial benefit programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Dedicated veteran services ensure that those who have served receive the support they need. Furthermore, the center connects people with various recovery programs, general healthcare services, and essential employment assistance to help individuals regain stability and independence. Additional community programs and practical services, such as haircuts, further broaden the scope of aid.

The choice of the Salvation Army building for the center's location leverages existing infrastructure and familiarity. The facility already provides daily meals, shower facilities, laundry services, and shelter during periods of extreme weather. This established presence means that many individuals in need are already accustomed to visiting the site. As Bourgeous noted, the center allows partners to “meet people where they are,” streamlining access to help by integrating new services into a familiar and trusted environment.

To accommodate the numerous participating organizations, a rotating schedule will be implemented at the center. This approach allows different providers to offer their specialized services throughout the month, working around their respective operational schedules while still ensuring consistent availability for residents. Looking ahead, the System of Care is also developing an innovative mobile application. This app is intended to help people experiencing homelessness to directly find local resources and support programs using their personal phones, further enhancing accessibility.

The Opportunity Center extends its support to anyone facing difficult circumstances and seeking assistance, not exclusively to those experiencing homelessness. Bourgeous articulated that the center represents merely “just the foundation” of what the Joplin community aspires to achieve in terms of support services. She reiterated the potential for greater impact, emphasizing that the community is capable of “do[ing] more,” provided it maintains a “coordinated approach.” The center marked its official grand opening on Tuesday with a ceremony that included welcome remarks, a ribbon-cutting, a guided tour, and comprehensive information sessions detailing the variety of services now available to the public.
