An early Monday morning pursuit south of Joplin concluded when a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper utilized a tactical vehicle intervention to stop a fleeing vehicle, leading to the arrest of James N. Gibbs. Gibbs now faces charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated and aggravated fleeing a stop or detention, and he is currently held in the Jasper County Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond.
The incident began when a state trooper, patrolling in the Joplin area, observed a vehicle driven by Gibbs speeding on Range Line. The trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, signaling for Gibbs to pull over. However, according to the trooper's report, Gibbs allegedly failed to comply and continued driving south.
The pursuit carried on past Interstate 44, with Gibbs’ vehicle reportedly turning west onto 44th Street. The chase continued through the early hours, spanning roads in the area immediately south of Joplin. The pursuit ended around 12:46 a.m. when the trooper made the decision to employ a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI). This specific law enforcement maneuver is designed to safely conclude a vehicle pursuit by causing the suspect's vehicle to lose control and stop. In this instance, the TVI successfully caused Gibbs’ car to spin. The spinning vehicle subsequently struck a concrete median, bringing the pursuit to an immediate halt. Following the impact and the cessation of movement, Gibbs was taken into custody by the trooper without any further attempts to flee or extend the pursuit.
Upon apprehending Gibbs, the trooper noted several observations consistent with intoxication. A strong odor of alcohol was reportedly detected emanating from Gibbs. Additionally, the trooper observed that Gibbs’ eyes were extremely bloodshot. These findings contributed to the trooper's assessment and the subsequent charges.
Further information from court records, which were referenced in the probable cause statement for Gibbs' arrest, indicates a pattern of similar prior offenses. These official records show that Gibbs has been convicted of driving while intoxicated on three previous occasions. These prior convictions date back to arrests made in 2014, 2018, and 2020. This history is a factor in the current aggravated DWI charge, signifying a heightened level of seriousness due to previous offenses.
The trooper's report also details that Gibbs' behavior became increasingly combative following his arrest. While at the Jasper County Jail for processing, Gibbs allegedly made several aggressive actions. He reportedly attempted to push through jail staff, directing this attempt toward the trooper. Furthermore, Gibbs is accused of striking a holding cell with his fist. During this period, he also allegedly made verbal threats. These actions at the jail further contributed to the charges filed against him, specifically the aggravated fleeing a stop or detention charge, which reflects not just the initial flight but also the alleged non-compliance and hostility during the booking process. Gibbs remains in jail pending judicial proceedings related to these new charges.
