Carthage will hold its third annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 14, 2026, inviting businesses, community organizations, and individuals to participate in a procession beginning at 2 p.m. on the Historic Downtown Square. The American Legion, VFW Post 2590, and its Auxiliary are organizing the event, which aims to bring the community together to honor local service members.
Organizers hope for increased community engagement this year, noting that previous parades have seen limited turnout. Juris, a spokesperson for the event, acknowledged that participation has been low in recent years. The parade is scheduled for November 14 to distinguish it from Veterans Day on November 11 and a separate parade planned for Joplin on November 7.
Businesses, clubs, community groups, and individuals are welcome to enter, provided their entries reflect patriotism and support for the nation's troops. Juris emphasized that participants are not required to be veterans or represent a veterans organization. He clarified that entries simply need to be patriotic and supportive of military personnel. Registration is currently open, but entries must be submitted by Friday, November 6. Community members interested in participating can call 417-358-1657 for more information.
The core message behind the parade is a simple call to appreciation: "They showed up for us. Now it's our turn," Juris stated. Veterans, he explained, have spent years serving their country, often in demanding circumstances, a commitment that has existed since 1775. Juris hopes residents will use this opportunity to show their respect and support for those who have served. He encouraged the public to attend and participate, noting that veterans have often served without public recognition.
Following the parade, activities will continue at VFW Post 2590, where organizers plan to offer free food to attendees. The band Loose Cannons is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m. Juris highlighted that the entire day's events are intended to be family-oriented and welcoming to the broader community.
Beyond the annual parade, VFW Post 2590 serves as a year-round gathering place for veterans and other community members. Juris encourages veterans seeking companionship, support, or assistance with benefits to reach out. The post hosts regular coffee gatherings every Friday and Monday morning at 9 a.m., where members of the community, not just veterans, are invited to connect. Juris underscored the post's mission to assist veterans, describing it as a place where "vets help vets." Residents can learn more about the post's ongoing activities, including its Independence Day fireworks celebration, by checking its social media presence.
Organizers encourage residents to share this invitation with local businesses, clubs, neighbors, and anyone who might wish to participate in the parade or attend, aiming to make this year's tribute a meaningful expression of gratitude for those who have served.
